Can you have sweeteners on the Candida diet?

Yes, sweeteners can be included in a Candida-focused diet, but the type and amount matter. The main consideration is whether a sweetener provides significant amounts of sugars or carbohydrates, and whether it causes digestive symptoms or makes it harder to reduce your overall intake of sweet foods.

Table sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave, and other sugar-based sweeteners contain sugars and are therefore generally limited during stricter versions of a Candida diet. Natural or less-refined does not necessarily mean low in sugar.

Other sweeteners, including stevia, monk fruit extract, erythritol, and xylitol, contain little or no conventional sugar and generally have less effect on blood glucose than table sugar. However, sugar alcohols such as xylitol and erythritol can cause digestive symptoms in some people, particularly when consumed in larger amounts.

It is also important to distinguish between dietary advice and treatment for Candida infection. There is not good clinical evidence that avoiding particular sweeteners can treat a Candida infection. 1. Is Stevia OK on the Candida diet?

Stevia is a high-intensity sweetener made from compounds called steviol glycosides, which are extracted from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana. Unlike table sugar, purified steviol glycosides provide sweetness without contributing significant amounts of sugar or carbohydrate.

Stevia therefore can be a practical alternative when you’re trying to reduce added sugar on a Candida-focused diet.

Why choose stevia?

  • Very low in sugar: Purified steviol glycosides don’t provide the sugars found in table sugar.
  • Minimal effect on blood glucose: Stevia generally has little effect on blood glucose when used as a sweetener.

If you want to use stevia primarily to reduce sugar, choose a product whose ingredients match what you’re looking for rather than assuming every stevia product is the same.

2. Is Monk Fruit OK on the Candida Diet?

Monk fruit, also known as luo han guo, is a small fruit native to southern China. Its sweetness comes primarily from compounds called mogrosides, rather than from the sugars found in table sugar.

Pure monk fruit extract can therefore be a useful alternative when you’re trying to reduce added sugar on a Candida-focused diet.

Why choose monk fruit?

  • Very low in sugar: Pure monk fruit extract provides sweetness without the sugar found in table sugar.
  • Minimal effect on blood glucose: The mogrosides responsible for its sweetness aren’t metabolised like ordinary dietary sugars.
  • Very sweet: Monk fruit extracts can be many times sweeter than sucrose, so only a small amount is needed.
  • Useful for reducing added sugar: It can add sweetness without relying on conventional sugar.

As with stevia, however, monk fruit isn’t a treatment for Candida. There’s no good clinical evidence that eating monk fruit eliminates Candida or prevents Candida infections.

Check the ingredient list

This is particularly important with monk fruit products.

Many products marketed as “monk fruit sweetener” aren’t pure monk fruit extract. They may combine monk fruit with erythritol, allulose, sugar or other ingredients to create a product that measures and tastes more like table sugar.

What about monk fruit during a stricter Candida diet?

Because pure monk fruit extract contains very little or no conventional sugar, it can be a practical option for people who want sweetness while reducing added sugar.

But there’s no scientifically established “Candida-safe” threshold for monk fruit, and there’s no requirement to use sweeteners at all. The amount and overall dietary pattern matter more than finding a particular sweetener that is supposedly protective against Candida.

Is Xylitol OK on the Candida Diet?

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol (polyol) that occurs naturally in small amounts in some fruits and vegetables and is also commercially produced from plant materials.

It has a sweet taste similar to sugar but provides fewer calories and generally has a smaller effect on blood glucose than sucrose. Because it isn’t a conventional sugar, xylitol is often used as an alternative to sugar in reduced-sugar foods and dental products.

For a Candida-focused diet, xylitol can be an option for some people, but digestive tolerance is the main consideration.

Does xylitol feed Candida?

There is laboratory research investigating xylitol and Candida, including studies examining its effects on Candida growth and biofilms. However, this does not establish xylitol as a treatment for Candida infection, nor does it mean that xylitol is universally “Candida-safe.”

For the purposes of this article, the more useful distinction is that xylitol doesn’t behave like table sugar nutritionally, while its potential digestive effects make individual tolerance important.

When should you use it?

There’s no scientifically established rule that xylitol must be introduced only after a particular number of weeks on a Candida diet.

Sweeteners to Limit on a Candida Diet

If you’re following a Candida-focused eating pattern, it can be helpful to distinguish between sugar-containing sweeteners and sugar substitutes.

Sweeteners such as sugar, honey, maple syrup and agave contain substantial amounts of sugars, so they may be limited when the goal is to reduce added sugar.

Sugar alcohols and high-intensity sweeteners are different. They generally contain little or no conventional sugar, but some can cause digestive symptoms or may be combined with other ingredients in commercial products.

The FDA classifies xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, mannitol and maltitol as sugar alcohols(U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2025). These sweeteners generally have fewer calories than sugar and produce a smaller rise in blood glucose, but some can cause gas, bloating or diarrhoea, particularly when consumed in larger amounts.  

The important point: a sweetener being a sugar alcohol doesn’t automatically make it unsuitable for a Candida-focused diet. Individual digestive tolerance and the overall dietary pattern matter.

Should You Use Sweeteners at All?

You don’t have to give up sweet foods completely, but reducing your overall preference for sweetness can be a useful long-term goal.

Replacing sugar with a low-sugar sweetener can make dietary changes easier, particularly when you’re first reducing added sugar. However, using large amounts of intensely sweet foods and drinks can maintain a preference for very sweet flavours.

For some people, gradually reducing the amount of sweetener they use can help foods and drinks taste naturally sweeter over time.

The goal doesn’t have to be “find the perfect Candida-safe sweetener.”

Instead, think of sweeteners as an optional tool:

Reduce added sugar → choose an appropriate alternative when useful → gradually rely less on sweetness.

There’s also no requirement to use a sweetener simply because it contains little or no sugar. If you enjoy your tea, coffee or food without added sweetness, that’s perfectly fine too.

Honey and the Candida Diet: What Does the Evidence Say?

Honey is one of the more interesting foods to consider when discussing sweeteners and Candida because the answer isn’t quite as simple as “honey is good” or “honey is bad.”

From a dietary perspective, honey is still a concentrated source of naturally occurring sugars, particularly fructose and glucose.  

This means honey is very different from high-intensity sweeteners such as stevia or pure monk fruit extract. If your goal is to reduce added sugar, honey still counts as a source of sugar.

But doesn’t honey have antifungal properties?

Interestingly, laboratory research has found that some honeys can inhibit Candida species.

A 2006 study tested several types of honey against clinical Candida isolates and found significant antifungal activity, although the activity varied between honeys (Irish et al., 2006).  

Other laboratory research has also found antifungal activity against different Candida species, with the effect varying according to the type and concentration of honey tested.  

So there is a genuine scientific basis for investigating honey’s antifungal properties.

But this is where we need to make an important distinction.

Antifungal activity isn’t the same as treating Candida

Finding that honey inhibits Candida in a laboratory experiment does not mean that eating honey treats Candida infection.

Laboratory studies often expose microorganisms directly to particular concentrations of a substance. That is very different from consuming honey as a food and having it pass through the digestive system.

There is also considerable variation between different types of honey, so the results from one honey cannot automatically be applied to every jar of honey sold as a food.  

Clinical research into honey and Candida has mainly investigated topical or medical-grade honey preparations, rather than eating ordinary honey as a dietary treatment. For example, a randomized clinical trial investigated honey gel applied vaginally for vulvovaginal candidiasis (Seifinadergoli et al., 2020).

These findings should not be interpreted as evidence that eating honey can treat a Candida infection.

So, can you eat honey on a Candida diet?

If you’re following a stricter sugar-reduction phase, honey is generally something you may choose to limit because it contains substantial amounts of sugar.

That recommendation is about its sugar content, not because we can say that honey automatically “feeds Candida” or that everyone with Candida must avoid it.

There is no good evidence establishing a universal amount of dietary honey that causes Candida overgrowth, nor is there evidence that eating honey is a treatment for Candida infection.

The practical takeaway: if you’re trying to reduce added sugar, stevia or pure monk fruit extract are lower-sugar alternatives to honey. If you choose to include honey, consider it a sugar-containing sweetener rather than assuming that its natural origin or laboratory antifungal properties make it a Candida treatment.

What about Manuka honey?

Manuka honey is particularly interesting because it has well-studied antimicrobial properties, but the same distinction applies: antimicrobial activity in laboratory or topical applications does not establish that eating Manuka honey treats Candida infection.

If you’re interested in Manuka honey specifically, look at the evidence for the particular preparation and the way it is being used rather than assuming that all Manuka honey has the same clinical effects.

Bottom line: Honey is a natural sweetener that contains significant amounts of sugar. Laboratory research and some clinical research has investigated honey’s antimicrobial and antifungal properties, but this should not be confused with evidence that eating honey treats Candida. For a Candida-focused diet, the more relevant question is how honey fits into your overall approach to reducing added sugar.

Can stevia feed Candida?

Is erythritol safe for Candida?

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, saccharin and acesulfame potassium are very different from sugar because they provide intense sweetness in very small amounts and generally have little or no effect on blood glucose. The FDA has evaluated these sweeteners and considers approved uses safe under specified conditions.  
There is no good evidence that artificial sweeteners treat Candida or prevent Candida infections, so they shouldn’t be chosen because they are supposedly antifungal.
If you’re following a Candida-focused diet, whether to use them is largely a matter of personal preference, overall dietary pattern and individual tolerance. And remember: sugar cravings are not evidence that you have Candida. They can occur for many different reasons and are not a diagnostic sign of Candida infection.
